Ethiopia, which is the OEM’s “first printer assembly plant in Africa”.
The plant was inaugurated last Monday by both Samsung’s African subsidiary, Samsung Electronics East Africa, and Tana Communication PLC, with the factory set to manufacture up to 70 printers a day, the first models of which will be the ML-2160, SXZ-3405W, ML5015ND and SL-M8320D - a mixture of monochrome and MFP machines.
At the inauguration ceremony, Tana’s CEO Sium Adugna stated that the plant, “in addition to creating job opportunities”, will also “facilitate Ethiopia’s efforts [to] transfer knowledge and technology”. Adugna added that the facility will increase “the production of printers, which in turn will make Samsung […] competitive in Ethiopia”.
Robert Nigeru Iso, Samsung East Africa’s Vice President, commented that the opening of the plant is a “sign [of] Samsung’s commitment to build [up] Africa’s information and communication technologies’ capacity”, and that the OEM will “bring printer assembly engineers from Korea” to “equip local talent with [the] necessary skills for running the assembly [plant]”.
